If you have read my website, you will know that the DHA component of OMega-3 is helpful in preventing macular degeneration. Here is another study that shows improve protection for your eyesight from another related eye disease retinitis pigmentosa. -Garey Simmons, Omega-3 Specialist

==================================

A report published Online First by Archives of Ophthalmology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals, reveals that adults with retinitis pigmentosa who took vitamin A supplements over a period of four to six years, showed slower decline in annual rates of distance and retinal visual acuities by consuming a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

Retinitis pigmentosa is an eye disease in which there is damage to the retina. Approximately 2 million individuals (about 1 in 4,000) worldwide are affected by the condition, which typically results in night blindness. Symptoms usually first appear in childhood, but severe vision problems, such as loss of side vision, tunnel vision, and virtual blindness, do not usually develop until early to late adulthood.

If there is one word in your vocabulary that you have learned quite enough about it is cholesterol. Statin drugs are the best selling drugs in all of mankind’s history. Lipitor alone spends $60,000,000 a year on television advertising.

So you think you know what to do when the doctor sends you for a blood test and your total cholesterol comes back in a range and says, “We’d better put you on a statin.” Your ready for it because you’ve seen all those rugged men and good looking ladies agreeing and being so thankful that their doctor put them on a statin.

Here’s a doctor’s question: Dr Jerome Hoffman, UCLA Professor of Emergency Medicine

(Paraphrased) What if you put 250 people in a room and told them they would each pay $1000 a year for a drug they would have to take every day, that many would get diarrhea and muscle pain, side effects include possible liver decimation and that 249 would have no benefit? How many would take that offer?

In fact some of you may have already taken that offer. Doctor Hoffman is referring to statin drugs. It’s a long story how we got to where we are but let’s look for a short moment this failed treatment plan. It started long ago with the Framingham Heart Study.

For many years, researchers poured over data about the certifiable causes of death of the citizens of Framingham Massachusetts. It was concluded that high cholesterol correlated to heart disease. Western medicine is excellent in its execution and in acute care abilities, but has been notoriously near sighted in looking at and treating symptoms without digging to find the root causes! There I said it!

The flaw with the idea of treating cholesterol is that it is not holistic. It isolates at one variable: cholesterol without any regard to other conditions.

In the case of cholesterol, what is it, exactly?

It’s fat. The liver produces it and for good reason. It’s part of the bigger picture, the whole picture. Cholesterol is needed by body for scores of functions. It’s necessary for human health.

Statins decrease cholesterol and simultaneously decreases Co enzyme Q10, which decreases hormones, which decreases immune response and decreases muscle energy. Oh, the heart is a very important hard working muscle and we just rob your heart of the catalyst for mitochondrial cellular energy! Shucks.

We lowered your cholesterol but then you up and died of a heart attack. So sorry. I am reminded of our good friend Tim Russert from Meet the Press. He had just returned back to work from a family vacation in Italy. He died of a massive heart attack. He was on Lipitor and his total cholesterol was 150. Lipitor didn’t help him.

Like the poor farmer who successfully got his cow off of feed and would of gotten her off of water too if she hadn’t up and died!

More recently many doctors are coming to the conclusion its inflammation plus cholesterol that creates heart disease.

Now look at this American Heart Association statement: contrast this information with a natural food product called omega-3s.

“Omega-3 fatty acids benefit

1. the heart of healthy people, and

2. those at high risk of, or

3. those who have, cardiovascular disease.“

Omega-3s are found in walnuts, flaxseed, chia seeds and of course fish oils.

Major Benefits of Omega-3s I have observed.

Reversal of Heart Disease

Improvement of Brain Function

Supports Eye Health

Natural Anti-Inflammatory

Better Joint Health

Better Mood

On my website I have a 20 page report of the findings on Omega-3s as published by NIH in pubmed.gov. Download now. (Right click and save)

WebMD Dr. Louise Chang

“The benefits of omega-3s include reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke while helping to reduce symptoms of hypertension, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), joint pain and other rheumatoid problems, as well as certain skin ailments. Some research has even shown that omega-3s can boost the immune system and help protect us from an array of illnesses including Alzheimer’s disease.”

It takes 15 seconds a day to take a couple of Omega-3 capsules. It will decrease the likelihood of stroke and heart attack, it will help your joints, it will improve brain function and may help to prevent dementia, it will help modulate your cholesterol, hormones and immunity system.

I started this 15 second a day regimen in 2005 and can tell you from my own personal experience, it works. Yes, there are few other things you should do, diet and exercise and we can share more on that later, but taking omega-3s is all upside and no downsides. It is the gateway to a healthy life. Try it for 3 months and see if you are feeling better getting healthier.

We have lost people that we love because of this silent killer, every single day. Did you know nearly 40 percent of people who are diagnosed with heart disease get their diagnosis on the day they die? That’s right, sudden death is sometimes the very first indication that someone has heart disease. Read More

Healthy lifestyle reduces risk in heart disease – such as healthy diet, exercise, weight loss, may also protect men from prostrate cancer.

What’s good for the heart may also be good for the prostrate.

says study author Dr. Jean-Alfred Thomas II, a postdoctoral fellow in the division of urology, said in a Duke Medicine news release.

He and his colleagues analyzed data from 6,390 men in a four-year clinical trial testing a drug’s effectiveness in reducing prostate cancer risk. Of those men, 547 reported a history of coronary artery disease before the start of the trial.

Omega-3: The Good Fat

Doctors may tell you to cut the fat, but not all fats are unhealthy. Omega-3 fatty acids may have far-reaching health benefits. Studies suggest they help lower the risk of heart disease, the nation’s top killer. They may also protect against symptoms of depression, dementia, cancer, and arthritis. Omega-3s are found in salmon, nuts, leafy greens, and more — but the health benefits can differ greatly from one source to another.

There are several different types of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Now some people are so conditioned to want to stick to a low fat, no fat diet that they get scared when they see the words “fatty acid.”

Have no fear. These fatty acids do not make you fat.

Your body needs certain fats to convert into hormones for your overall health. If you don’t get the right fats and enough of them, you will suffer.

If you have ever dealt with anorexia then you know what I am talking about.

Omega fatty acids come in various numeric combinations:

Omega-3s
Omega-6s and Omega-9s.

The number indicated where the first double bond occurs in the molecular structure. If it’s the 3rd place on the molecular chain then it’s an Omega-3, sixth place it’s an Omega-6, etc. Omega-3s are sorely deficient in today American diet, while Omega-6s are overly consumed. At the last randomized testing I’ve read about, the American public is thought to consume 15.6 times as many Omega-6s as Omega-3s. Herein lies the problem. Both are needed. But each has a different role to play. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory by nature and Omega-6s are pro-inflammatory by nature. Most people know Omega-9s from using olive oil on their salads.

The immune system needs to be somewhat pro-inflammatory in order to kill parasitical organisms, bacteria and so forth. But too much inflammation leads to joint problems, cardiovascular problems, diabetes and other diseases of “lifestyle.”

So in a perfect world the consumption of pro and anti inflammatory oils would be a 1:1 ratio. But Americans right now are upwards of 15 – 20% leaning in the pro-inflammatory direction.

Now, in the world of Omega-3 oils there are two main divisions: Plant based – think walnuts and flax seed. And animal based – think fish.

But these two groupings have really major distinctions: Plant based oils are Alpha Linolenic Acid or ALA, and the fish oils are broken into two major molecular compounds: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which have been heavily studied and to which most of the heart health benefits are attributed. ALA taken in by humans only convert to a 5% epa/dha ratio, although anecdotally I have met many people who swear their good health to ALA via flaxseed and walnuts.

In the world of fish, usually we consider salmon to be rich in Omega-3s, however, being creatures that are higher up in the food chain, they can also be harboring heavy metals swimming around in today’s oceans. We usually suggest wild caught over farm raised salmon, since the farm raised most likely have almost no Omega-3 since these oils are based upon what the fish eat. Fish in the wild eat much differently than farm raised fish.

In order to solve the dilemma of the heavy metal contamination, there is a process of molecular distillation that manufacturers put the oils through to distill out the heavy metals and make higher concentrations of EPA/DHA. Without molecular distillation nature averages about 180mg of EPA and 120 mgs of DHA per 1000 mgs. or 30%. Molecular distillation can increase the EPA / DHA up to 50%, 70% and even 85%.

Sourcing: As in the video above, Dr. Mercola recommends Krill Oil as a solution he prefers. Not everyone agrees with the good doctor. The amount of EPA/DHA is quite low but it is phospholipid based which means it absorbs quickly. Some oils are higher in DHA content, like Calamarine. Then you have the highly concentrated EPA/DHA like True Omega 3 and the All American Omega-3.

I like to take all of them, it’s not a case of either/or, but heck why not take some of each and get the various benefits.

It’s what I propose on my website, in the OMega-3 Protocol.

Omega-3 and omega-6 are types of essential fatty acids – meaning we cannot make them on our own and have to obtain them from our diet. Both are polyunsaturated fatty acids that differ from each other in their chemical structure. In modern diets, there are few sources of omega-3 fatty acids, mainly the fat of cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, black cod, and bluefish. There are two critical omega-3 fatty acids, (eicosapentaenoic acid, called EPA and docosahexaenoic or DHA), that the body needs. Vegetarian sources, such as walnuts and flaxseeds contain a precursor omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid called ALA) that the body must convert to EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA are the building blocks for hormones that control immune function, blood clotting, and cell growth as well as components of cell membranes.

Omega-3 or Omega-3s, or Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats. This means they are liquid at room temperature. Omega-3s are best known to be readily available to the human body through the eating of fatty, oily fish or by supplementing through the use of fish oil capsules.

In ancient times or even up to 100 years ago, Omega-3 fats were ready available in the diet because these fats appear in most green plants, including grass. So free range beef contained omega-3s fatty acids. In today’s world 99% of the beef available for purchase is grain fed and therefore the amounts of Omega-3s are negligible. For the record, humans cannot produced omega-3 fats inside the body, they must be ingested.

Here are some of the Major Benefits of Omega-3s:

Reversal of Heart Disease

Improves Brain Function

Supports Eye Health

Natural Ant i-Inflammatory

Better Joint Health

Better Mood

Since fish consume phytoplankton, they are a richer source of Omega-3s. And everybody can benefit from Omega-3s. Later we will discuss the ration of OMega-3 to Omega-6 and why it’s so important.

However, since the 1800′s because of industrialization, we have been burning coal as source of fuel not just for heat and fuel, but also to power industry. One of the by-products of burning coal is the release of toxic material into the atmosphere. The bits of arsenic, lead and other metals are then knocked down into the oceans’ by wind currents and rain. The heavy metals are then entrapped in the plankton which the fish eat and the heavy metals are passed up the food chain until we humans who eat fish are subject to this type of toxicity.

Herein lies the reason that we urgently stress using a detoxified Omega-3 supplement. I met a doctor who was working with patients who had a heavy metal toxicity. His father had eaten fish everyday of his life and died in his fifties from heavy metal poisoning. Omega-3 supplements that are molecularly distilled have no harmful side effects. No heavy metal poisoning and are safe for human consumption.
